2025 NEW YEAR BLOG

As we move into 2025, let’s review a few fun facts on prescribing trends taken from 2024!

Were you aware that all mammals, birds, reptiles and fish have been found to have an endocannabinoid system? Whilst majority of our scripts are for dogs, vets have also submitted scripts for cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes and horses, even a red panda! Top dog breeds prescribed CBD over the year included labradors, border collies, golden retrievers, cavoodles, kelpies, staffies, greyhounds and French bulldogs.

According to our prescribing data, did you know that in 2024 the main reasons vets were prescribing CBD was for pain? Whilst pain, anxiety and osteoarthritis remain the top 3 reasons vets are prescribing, there are so many conditions that can benefit from CBD including seizures, cognitive decline, atopy, palliative and many inflammatory conditions.

Oils make up 99% of the orders we receive, but don’t forget about our chews and topical which might be more appropriate for some situations. Whilst there’s a fairly even spread of what vets are prescribing, CBD isolate makes up 42% of all scripts received. The concentration prescribed most often is 100mg/ml and preferred flavour for our Australian pets is chicken!

PetCann in clinic kits have provided greater flexibility for vet prescribers after their first full year in market.

Our team has loved working with individual clinics, our corporate partners and attending industry events. Calendars are filling up for 2025 events and travel and we’re looking forward to working with all of you this year!

With access to blogs and resources to guide you available both on our website or by contacting us direct there is plenty of useful information available no matter where you’re at in your prescribing journey. If you’re new to prescribing you’ll feel reassured by checking out the APVMA’s website and their guidelines around prescribing medicinal cannabis. There’s a growing number of studies available and we’re constantly using these to develop our content and how we can best support you!
