Medicinal Cannabis Terminology

CBD isolate, broad spectrum and full spectrum oils explained by PetCann Veterinary Science Liaison Jenny Sandford.

We’re excited to introduce PetCann CBD formulations, a range of legal, holistic and professionally produced medicinal cannabis options for our furry patients.

You may be aware that veterinarians can prescribe medicinal cannabis for animals under Schedule 4 of the Poisons Standard in Australia. All PetCann formulations meet Schedule 4 requirements; containing at least 98% cannabidiol (CBD) and less than 2% other cannabinoids.

The cannabis plant contains two well-known major cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabis also contains many other minor cannabinoids, as well as terpenes and flavonoids. While CBD in isolation has an amazing range of pharmacological and therapeutic properties, other parts of the plant may also provide benefits. Utilising different parts of the cannabis plant together is known as the ‘entourage effect’ where compounds work synergistically to produce a therapeutic effect greater than the sum of their individual effects.

Formulation options are available as oils, treats, chews or topicals.

Currently PetCann offers three oil formulations for pets:

CBD Isolate Oil

CBD has been isolated from the cannabis plant and it is the only part of the cannabis plant included in this oil.

CBD Broad Spectrum Oil

Formulation contains >98% CBD. Up to 2% of the formulation is composed of other parts of the cannabis plant and other cannabinoids but does not include THC.

CBD Full Spectrum Oil

Formulation contains >98% CBD. Up to 2% of the formulation is composed of other parts of the cannabis plant and other cannabinoids, including THC.

Each oil is available in different concentrations (10mg/ml, 25mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 100mg/ml), and in chicken, beef or tuna flavour.

Treats and chews are also available for pets who need CBD on an as-needed basis, e.g. for situational anxiety, or where this provides an easier way for the pet parent to administer.

Topical formulations are not intended as a substitute for oral CBD, but can be used for localised skin healing and to reduce itch and inflammation.

Consider the following when selecting and prescribing PetCann medicinal cannabis for your pet patients. Remember we need the following information to be included on your prescription when you place your PetCann order:

  • Which formulation?
CBD Isolate, CBD Broad Spectrum, or CBD Full Spectrum oils. (Treats, chews and topicals contain CBD Isolate only)
  • Which concentration?
All oils are available in different concentrations. Treats and chews are available in different strengths.
  • Which flavour?
All oral formulations can be made in chicken, beef, or tuna flavour.
  • How much?
All oils are available in 30 or 50ml sizes; with our 100mg/ml oils also available in 100ml. Treats and chews come in quantities of 30. Topicals come in a 50ml pump.

If you have any questions please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

Warmly,
